World Cup: Ghana sacks Sports minister

Ghana's Minister of sports and his deputy have been removed from their positions in the wake of the country's abysmal performance in the World Cup.
The president, John Mahama, gave no reason for the order, but it comes after the team finished bottom of Group G, failing to win any games.
The president's statement said erstwhile sports minister, Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah has been reassigned as a minister of state in the government while his deputy Joseph Yammin had been sent to the Ashanti region as a deputy regional minister.
The team's World Cup campaign has been dogged by difficulties and controversy. Ghana's players threatened to strike unless a cash shipment containing unpaid fees was sent to them. Mahama was forced to send a plane load of £1.76m to Brasília for the players to share.
Meanwhile Sulley Muntari was suspended for what the country's FA alleged was "an unprovoked physical attack" on an FA executive committee member.
Schalke forward Kevin-Prince Boateng was also suspended indefinitely for what the FA said were "vulgar verbal insults" aimed at the team's coach, James Kwesi Appiah, during training.
The country's 2014 campaign was in sharp contrast to the 2010 one, in which Ghana progressed to the quarter-finals and were denied a goal that might have taken them to the semi-finals by a Luis Suárez handball.
Ghana's World Cup ended after a 2-1 loss to Portugal.

Keshi Blasts Referee Mark Geiger For Eagles' Fall

Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi hit out at American referee Mark Geiger after his side lost 2-0 to France in the World Cup last 16 in Brasilia on Monday.

"The referee is a human being and is bound to make mistakes, but a lot of mistakes is questionable," Keshi told his post-match press conference at the Mane Garrincha National Stadium. "I'm not happy with the officiating."

Keshi was aggrieved that Emmanuel Emenike had a first-half goal ruled out for offside, although replays suggested the call was correct, and also felt France had been allowed to get away with some over-zealous tackling.

Blaise Matuidi was only booked for an ugly challenge on Ogenyi Onazi that ended the Nigerian midfielder's game, while Olivier Giroud escaped punishment after catching John Mikel Obi with his elbow.

"On two occasions Onazi received very bad tackles and nothing was done about it. He is out now probably for weeks," Keshi added.

"This is the first time I've spoken about the referee in my life, because it wasn't good."

France prevailed through a 79th-minute Paul Pogba header and an injury-time own goal by Joseph Yobo, and will face either Germany or Algeria in the quarter-finals.

Doctors To Start Nationwide ‪Strike July 1

Doctors To Start Nationwide ‪Strike July 1

Doctors all over Nigeria are planning to embark on an indefinite strike on July 1 over pay, appointment titles and positions, two weeks after they issued an ultimatum to force government to consider their demands.

National delegates of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) who met last Saturday to consider government response to some 24 issues doctors have raised over the years concluded response to their demands was nonexistent even though both sides have met within the two weeks of ultimatum.

According to NMA president, Kayode Obembe, doctors were taking this painful route because their silence and gentle approach to these contending issues have been taken for granted.
But NMA set "minimum endpoints"—the least response it is ready to accept from government—on each of the 24 issues it raised in an open letter to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, published in newspapers on June 16.
After NMA demanded at least N100,000 per month in hazard allowance for doctors, up from a present N5,000, citing dangers doctors are routinely exposed to.
Clinical duty allowances for honorary consultants should be increased by 90% of consolidated medical salary scale, NMA requested, and doctors should be allowed to skip pay grades as other health workers are allowed.
It said only a government circular agreeing to its "minimum endpoints for restoration of sustainable sanity in patient care in Nigerian hospitals will end the strike."
Among its minimum end points, NMA wants:
to create positions as DCMAC—deputy chairman of medical advisory committees—to remain in teaching hospitals and federal medical centres.
not to use of the nomenclature "director" for anyone in hospitals other than a medical doctor, but insists non-medical workers can attain the height of their careers.
the title "consultant" in a hospital setting reserved for doctors handling patients and not applied to appointments of non-doctor consultants, insisting it "will be a source of confusion."
a speedy passage of the National Health Bill, universal health coverage to all Nigerians—even suggesting an extra one kobo per second on call costs to finance a community health insurance fund.
a surgeon-general of the federation appointed with immediate effect, in accordance with [the President's] pronouncement."
the Central Bank to withdraw a circular authorising Medical and Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria to approve licences for importation of in-vitro diagnostics (tools for lab tests), insisting that the council was duplicating the role of NAFDAC and causing obstacle to adequate development in healthcare.

"People are relaxing laws around medical equipment, but in Nigeria we are multiplying the obstacles," said Dr Obembe.

The indefinite strike doctors have called is the second this year, after they called but suspended a previous strike on January 5.

"We have to take this action in order to save the health care delivery system from anarchy that is palpably imminent," said Dr Obembe.

U.S Makes New Confession About Whereabout Of Chibok Girls In Borno State

The United States of America declared on Friday, 27 June, 2014, that it does not know the where-about of the 219 schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram in Chibok, Borno State, northeastern Nigeria contrary to earlier reports.

It could be recalled that no fewer 276 students of Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok, Borno State were abducted by members of Boko Haram on 14 April, 2014. Though some of the kidnapped schoolgirls reportedly managed to escape the insurgents after their abduction, 219 of them are still being held by the Islamists terror group.

Few days after the girls' abduction, leader of Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, said, in a video posted on the internet, that he would not release the schoolgirls except for an exchange of some of 'his brethren' captured by the Nigerian soldiers.

The Nigerian federal government led by President Goodluck Jonathan, supported by the international communities, had since stated they are not going to negotiate with the terroristson the matter, promising to ensure that all the missing girls are brought back home.

Speaking on attempt to rescue the schoolgirls from their abductors, Reuters reports that Pentagon spokesman, Rear Admiral John Kirby, told newsmen on Friday that it had decreased its surveillance flights in the search for the missing 219 schoolgirls.

According to the report, the spokesman also added that their overall effort was unchanged due to more flights by other countries. Kirby stated that it had no idea of the location of the girls, noting however that there is no letup in the efforts to locate and rescue them.

"We don't have any better idea today than we did before about where these girls are, but there's been no letup of the effort itself," the spokesman told reporters.
Kirby said the same level of effort was being sustained now through international involvement. Kirby denied a suggestion that US flights over Nigeria had been reduced to accommodate increased US surveillance over Iraq, where Washington is flying unmanned and manned aircraft to gather intelligence about Sunni insurgents.
He said some of the resources that were being used in Nigeria had been diverted from other missions in Africa and could now be used elsewhere on the continent.
US military personnel are in Abuja helping to coordinate the effort, and some 80 others were sent to Chad in May to support the surveillance operation.
Chad is northeast of Nigeria and borders the area in which Boko Haram is known to operate.
Also speaking on the matter, a US defence official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said American flights had been reduced only after a body of intelligence had been gathered and that the cuts had been offset by the British and the French support.

The defence official said surveillance alone would not lead to a resolution. "It will take the Nigerian piece of the equation with their own sources and human intelligence coupled with the other forms to really understand the picture," he noted.
In an opinion piece in the Washington Post on Friday, President Goodluck Jonathan said his government and security services had "spared no resources, have not stopped and will not stop until the girls are returned home."

Kidnappers threatened to behead my mother – Bayelsa commissioner

Kidnappers threatened to behead my mother – Bayelsa commissioner

According to Punch, Bayelsa State Commissioner for Lands and Survey, Mr. Furuebi Akene, have raised the alarm that the captors of his septuagenarian mother, Patimi Akene, have threatened to cut off her head.
Patimi was abducted recently by unknown gunmen at Fonibiri community of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. Akene, who spoke when some concerned Bayelsans paid him a sympathy visit on Saturday, said he was neither intimidated nor apprehensive over the threat. He said though the abductors had reduced the ransom demand from N30m to N10m in the last few days, it was worrisome that the captors still threatened to behead her mother over his refusal to accede to the ransom demand. The commissioner said, "One of the kidnappers, who claimed to be the leader of the gang threatened to kill my mother."He said he would cut off her head and deliver it to my house on INEC Road, Yenagoa, and leave her body at the village. His reason is because of the difficulty in getting me to agree with their demand, They are no longer calling me for ransom."Akene noted that though the kidnappers had stopped calling him, they had instead started negotiation with his younger sister. He said the unnamed sister pleaded with his mother's captors to collect N1m, but they refused, claiming that the amount was too minute for their fuel let alone their amount for their feeding and that of my mother. Akene recalled that when the news of the abduction got to him, he abandoned his proposed trip to attend the World Surveyors Conference in Malaysia."When they demanded that I resigned from the present administration as a condition for my mother's release, I told them that I was not a man out to sacrifice my mother for position."They allowed me to speak with her twice. The first time, she told me she was OK and I asked her if the kidnappers were Ijaws, she confirmed they were. On second occasion, they made my mother cry as a means to convince me of their seriousness. She was crying and begged me to secure her release and give them the money."They asked me to pay them their money. I told him I would not pay as I was not owing them. The last text I received was 'You have lost your mother'."Patimi was forcibly taken away by six gunmen around 1am from her home close to the waterside of the community on Saturday, June 14, 2014.The commissioner's mother and one of her grand daughters were returning home from a church vigil on the fateful day when the hoodlums swooped on her. The bandits were said to have sped away with the victim into the creeks in a speed boat they operated.

Celebrities & failed marriages - Etcetera

Etcetera writes about celebs and why some of their marriages fail. Read the koko below:

If you listen to relationship programmes on radio, you would notice that many Nigerians are indeed struggling with their relationships and marriages and they are all seeking help. And because they do not have a glaring media attention serialising their issues, making judgments, giving strong commentary, poking them emotionally, there are chances of their relationships and marriages problems being solved.

Why is it that with the fame, fortune and good looks, our celebrities' marriages still don't work?
It has been a strange phenomenon that the union of people in the limelight hardly lasts, indeed. So the question is, why do most celebrity marriages crash frequently?
Fame is dangerous to relationships for many reasons. Most troubling is that it demands that a couple spend time away from each other. One indicator of happiness in a relationship is the amount of time spent with one's partner.
Spending time together is necessary to sustain a relationship, yet celebrities tend to ignore this and only focus on how to become more famous. You need to keep up with each other's lives, look into each other's eyes, and be in the same physical space to feel the mood and emotions from each other.

Without that, you might love each other, but staying "in love" demands much more than occasional get-together.
The man who loves you may start losing feelings because of the demands of your job. Your spouse, for instance, wants you to be home, but you cannot be at home because you are either on location or at one event or another socialising as a celebrity.

Celebs are expected to be extroverts – attending parties, or going to bars or clubs. Your spouse may not like all that. These things take their toll and it gets to a point when one of the parties says that he or she has had enough, and then packs his or her bag and leaves.

Most celebs don't really take time to understand each other or truly understand what marriage is about before venturing into it. Some even see it as just an added feather to their cap. They love to gather people together, go to church and stand before the altar to exchange vows in front of the congregation. There is actually more to marriage than the physical appearance.
The pressure to live up to certain standards and give a good impression also contributes to marital splits among celebs. Because of their status, they put too much unnecessary pressure on themselves and try too hard to live up to the standard of others.
Most tend to live a life that is not theirs.

The pressure of wanting to create or give people the impression of having a sense of perfection will certainly make your marriage crumble. Put a stop to all the pretence and be real to yourself.

Infidelity is the most common cause of most celebrity marriage break-ups in Nigeria. Some spouses have left their marriages when they could no longer bear the indiscretions of their unfaithful partners.
Infidelity is not restricted to celebrities only. It is a major source of marital discord today. But what makes that of celebrities different is the temptation they face regularly. Because of living their lives constantly in the spotlight and fame, they are presented with more 'opportunities' to cheat than others.
When musicians, for instance, go for shows, girls throw themselves at them. Even a Reverend Father can get tempted with all the 'offerings.' If one partner is constantly unfaithful, it can cause discord in the marriage.
Jealousy is also a problem in celebrity union. If one, for instance, has more fame, more success than the other, it can cause problems if the other party does not have the strength of character to cope with his or her partner being constantly in the limelight.
It takes a very strong man or woman to endure his wife, for instance, being more famous, getting more attention than them. You attend a party, and your husband or wife observes you being embraced and kissed here and there, jealousy starts getting into the marriage. It doesn't even matter if both of you are celebrities.
Put your ego aside. As celebs, you're going to be constantly fighting for the limelight. But marriage is all about concessions, even if it takes one of you to have to ride in the backseat for awhile for things to work out.

Money is the root of most problems in marriages. When your wedding planning starts taking the shape of a corporate board meeting, you're already in trouble. Play deaf to the rumours. Celebrities are always insecure about one thing or another, and it is the reason a lot of media rumours are going to tear your already shaky relationship to shreds. Stop selling your privacy in pictures, on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook.
Choose whether you want to remain single or get married. Marriage is hard when you are used to being in control all the time. But suddenly you can't just wake up one morning and jet off to Abuja or London for a weekend with your friends or spend N100,000 on a pair of shoes without certain considerations.
When you're used to being the centre of your world, it is not easy to take that step back and let someone else have a major stake in your life.
Like every electronic device, marriage comes with a manual which must be followed to the letter if you want it to be successful. Celebrity marriages will continue to crash as long as they are building them on themselves and not on God, who is the initiator of marriage.

Our close shave with death — Abuja blast survivors

ABUJA—As outrage from within and outside Nigeria continues to trail last Wednesday’s bomb blast in Abuja, which claimed 22 lives and left 50 others injured, some of the survivors have narrated their close shave with death.
The Department of State Service, DSS, on its part disclosed that security agencies actually obtained intelligence reports two weeks ago that the terrorists planned to attack a busy shopping mall or market in Abuja. Major markets in the city were virtually deserted, yesterday, following the bomb blast.
Taxi driver cheats death
A taxi driver, who identified himself as Malachy Odo, said he was caught up in the midst of the ravaging fire after the bomb exploded at the car park of Emab Plaza.
He said: “I had arrived at the plaza in my cab minutes earlier. After the last passenger alighted from the cab, I was reversing when I heard the explosion. My car went up in flames, and I struggled to pass through the window and in the process my left hand caught fire.  As I was running for my dear life, broken glasses pierced my feet. I was later rushed by rescuers to Maitama General Hospital.”
Another survivor, Mrs Mary Andrew, said she was lying on the ground beside her groundnut tray, while waiting for buyers at the entrance of Emab Plaza, when the blast occurred.
According to her:  “I was lying down when the bomb exploded, and my baby was also with me. After the blast, I discovered that three of my fellow groundnut sellers were dead. I was very lucky, I was not hurt, and I thank God for saving my life.”
I was covered with broken glasses —Olasupo
Samuel Olasupo, who sells and repairs mobile phones at Emab plaza had this to say: “I was about to take step out of my shop to the gate to buy corn, when the bomb exploded. I was thrown to the floor and my body was pierced by pieces of glass. When I recovered from the impact of the blast, I gave glory to God.” He said the bomb-laden car was said to have been parked at the entrance of the plaza for more than 30 minutes with nobody inside.
Daniel Itodo said he was still searching for his cousin, 24-year-old Bassey Bassey, who hails from Cross River State. Bassey, who was said to be the first child of his parents was working with a pharmaceutical shop at the plaza.
“I was at home when I heard about the bomb blast at Wuse II, and I remembered that my cousin, Bassey  Bassey was at the shopping plaza. I rushed to the pharmacy where  he was working at Emab plaza, near Banex. I was told that about three minutes before the bomb blast, my cousin left with a customer that came to the pharmacy to  buy some drugs. Since then his phone has been switched off and he is nowhere to be found. I have gone to University of Abuja Teaching Hospital and National Hospital, where I saw health officials attending to some injured people brought to them, and I learnt four persons were in the intensive care unit.  But I was not allowed to have access to them. I went to Garki Hospital and I could not see him there.”
He continued: “I went to Maitama General Hospital where I  saw up to 10 dead bodies. Four could not be identified because the bodies were charred. One of the bodies was without a head, with intestines packed on one side.
“The parents are yet to be informed because we have not seen him dead or alive. We are still searching for him. I will meet with the manager of the pharmacy to know whether the customer was alive or both of them died and for the management of the pharmacy to tell us the exact story about our brother’s whereabouts.
“I want the government to step up security, because it is very painful as innocent Nigerians are daily becoming the objects of attacks. The security agencies should improve on their strategies because these terrorists are spreading fast across the country.”
Another eyewitness who spoke to Vanguard identified himself as Joseph Okonkwo. Okonkwo who said he is a journalist said his office was located at Emab Plaza. He said he writes for Legis Magazine based in Abuja.
Said he: “As I was  entering Emab Plaza, yesterday (Wednesday), I  walked past a particular shop I normally go to which is close to the gate. I later saw the person I went to visit and discussed with him after which I suddenly heard a big bang. A lot of things flew into the air. I saw a lot of smoke.
“I began to run and  when I was about to jump a fence, I  saw some people  whose skin had been peeled by the heat generated by the blast. They were trying to jump too. Everybody ran to the back side because the explosion occurred at the gate.  Some people who were close to me were affected by the blast. The impact of the blast is still disturbing me. I was psychologically affected but physically okay.”
Speaking to news men at the scene of the blast yesterday, the FCT Commander of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Mr E.C.Ewurum confirmed that some suspects were arrested by security operatives at the scene of the explosion. He said they had been taken away for interrogation. He also said three ambulances involved in rescue operations had already taken the  dead and injured victims of the blast to different hospitals within the city.
My close shave with death
“My name is Ikechuku Iba, aka Ogbologbo. I am a taxi driver in Abuja,  my park is at Emab plaza and everybody in the plaza knows that I always stayed at the exact spot where the bomb went off yesterday. That was where I usually parked my car, waiting for passengers. But thank God, on Wednesday, 30 minutes before the bomb went off  my sister phoned me to come. I was reluctant at first because it was the peak of activities but I later decided to go. Just 30 minutes after I left the Plaza, the bomb went off.  Thank God I wasn’t around and thank God  I went to Asokoro to see my sister. A lot of people were calling me to ask whether I was involved because they all know I was always there.
“There was a particular boy I saw being taken to the hospital and I knew the mother as a banana seller, I used to buy banana and groundnut from her but she was caught up in the blast and she died. I knew so many others who died. When I went to Maitama hospital yesterday to check people, I recognised about four people but some people were badly burnt”.
On whether there was any of his friends missing,  he said: “There was one Mallam Shehu who used to sell fruits at Emab plaza; we have been looking for him since the blast but we are yet to locate him, and  Saheed, who sold provisions had his two legs cut off; the woman that used to sell banana, who we called Mama Bobby died in the blast. One Mama Charity also died as well as one Hausa man that used to sell  guava. So many other people  died.
“We are still looking for one of our drivers whose car was completely burnt in the blast, his name is Ukpu.  We have checked Maitama Hospital, he is not there.
We got intelligence report of plans by terrorist to attack— DSS
24 hours after the bomb blast, the Department of State Services, DSS disclosed, yesterday, that security agencies got intelligence report two weeks ago showing that terrorists planned to attack a busy shopping mall or market in Abuja.
Deputy Director Information, Department of State Services (DSS), Marilyn Ogar, who made the disclosure, said “when we got the report we had to go from one shopping complex to another telling people to be more security conscious and vigilant. Every day since the report, our surveillance teams went round the motor parks, markets, supermarkets, trying to ensure that the instruction we left behind were strictly adhered to.
“Yesterday (Wednesday), the surveillance team was here (Emab Plaza) up till about 12:30pm observing, monitoring. When they discovered that the security people here were enforcing what they were told, the team retreated.” She urged Nigerians to continue to give security agencies information that will help them stop the terrorists in their track.
Also speaking, Force Police Public Relations Officer, ACP Frank Mba advised managers of big companies and owners of cinemas and busy shopping malls to help by instituting a strong access control regime and also install CCTV cameras.
Mba reiterated the importance of shielding hawkers from entering shopping malls saying, “it’s also good to keep away hawkers from busy places, because hawkers attract people which make the target softer”.
We’ll defeat the terrorists — Sambo
Meanwhile Vice President of Nigeria, Namadi Sambo, yesterday, condemned in strong terms, the activities of terrorists saying “this cowardly and unjust act will be defeated; evil can never be sustained”.
The Vice President, who was accompanied by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, (SGF), Senator Ayim Pius Ayim; the Minister of FCT, Sen. Bala Mohammed; the Minister of Interior, Comrade Abba Moro and the Minister of State for FCT, Oloye Olajumoke Akinjide spoke when he visited the scene of the bomb blast.
Reiterating Government’s commitment towards fighting terrorism, Sambo said: “Mr. President will not leave any stone unturned until we defeat this terrorism. Terrorism cannot survive in Nigeria or any part of this country. We are doing everything to ensure that within the shortest possible time, this will become a matter of the past”.
Another victim dies, 52 injured, 34 vehicles damaged
One of the injured, who was at admitted at the Intensive Care Unit, ICU, of the National Hospital is dead. Vanguard investigations across the major hospitals in Abuja, yesterday also revealed that the number of those injured was 52.  The police told journalists at the scene of the blast that only 17 people were injured.
Specifically, the Director-General of the FCT Emergency Management Agency, FEMA, Alhaji Abbas Idriss said the 52 injured victims are spread across five hospitals in the FCT: Maitama has a total umber of 36 victims, Wuse Hospital, 7; National Hospital 6; Garki Hospital 2 and Turkish Hospital 1. It was equally learnt that while 17 vehicles were completed destroyed , a total of 34 were damaged.
Major markets deserted
A visit by Vanguard to major markets in the Abuja metropolis showed that they were virtually deserted as very few traders ventured to open their shops. Customers also preferred to shop at neighbourhood shops. Most affected were: Wuse, Garki, Utako.
The Head, Corporate Affairs of the Abuja Market Management Limited, AMML, Mr Innocent Amaechina, who spoke to Vanguard on phone yesterday, said the scanty market activities in the FCT was quite natural because of the explosion  the previous day.
But he advised that rather than panic at the development, residents should be reassured that government was on top of any possible security breach in the markets.
“The fact is that people are afraid naturally because of what has happened and people are becoming more security conscious especially after the bombing of Emab plaza.”
He said the agency is in close collaboration with security agencies to see that markets in the FCT are safe for Abuja residents.
US, EU condemn Abuja bomb blast
The United States (US) and the European Union have also condemned the bomb attack at the Emab Plaza, Abuja, describing it as heartless act.

NBA asks FG to step up efforts to end terrorism
The Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, in its reaction yesterday, urged the federal government to intensify its efforts towards ensuring an end to the current reign of terror in Nigeria.
The association, in a statement it issued in Abuja yesterday, signed by the National President of the association, Chief Okey Wali, SAN, read: “The Nigerian Bar Association received with shock the sad news of bomb blast in Emab Plaza, located at Wuse II area of Nigeria’s Capital, Abuja on June 25, 2014 which resulted in the unfortunate and untimely death of 22 persons and left many more injured.
“This latest bomb explosion in Abuja is only part of a series of sporadic bomb blasts in some parts of Nigeria.
“The NBA outrightly condemns this bomb blast, which has caused deaths and grievous bodily injuries to many Nigerians.
“There can never be any justification for these dastardly and brazen acts of carnage.
“This latest bomb explosion brings to the fore the need for the Federal Government of Nigeria to intensify efforts in bringing these acts of terrorism and insurgency to an end.”
CAN, Catholic Church condemn blasts
THE Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN and the Catholic Church has also condemned the bomb blast, saying that these activities of Islamic fundamentalists have brought untold embarrassment to the nation.
In two separate reactions last night, Secretary General of CAN, Rev. Musa Asake and the Director of Social Communications at the Lagos Archdiocese, Monsignor Gabriel Osu were unanimous in pleading with the Federal Government and especially the security agencies to fashion tactics in dealing with themenace, admonishing that the leadership of the Church has been restraining Christian youth to avoid plunging the nation into a huge conflagration we may be able to contain.
Asake maintained that the Federal Government has done a great deal to stamp out the renewed wave of terrorism in the country, “but they still need to do more since these Islamic jihadists have refused to respect the sanctity of human life.”
According to him, there is the urgent need to effectively monitor the nation’s borders and stop these foreign muruaders because “I am yet to believe that Nigerians will mindlessly bomb their fellow brothers in these dastardly manner and still able to sleep at night.”

Lionel Messi has rated the #SuperEagles highly, especially the team's attack and praised his team for overcoming the Nigerian hurdle, africanfootball.comreports.

Messi, who scored twice in the game against the African champions, said Argentina must step up their performance as the competition enters its tougher phase.

"I think we have improved from the last two games. We played against a team that was going forward with good players," Messi said.

"We saw a good Argentina, despite the two Nigerian goals. Now we want more, we have to keep improving.

"We said before: our strikers had to move a little bit more because we weren't finding spaces. We had that against Nigeria and we have to work, so the next game we won't concede goals."

The Barcelona forward also revealed that he was enjoying the atmosphere surrounding the tournament, as he bids to lead Argentina to their first World Cup trophy since 1986.

"It's great to see so many people here. We were expecting it and in the previous games it was like that," he continued.

Brazil 2014: Michael Babatunde Surgery Successful

#SuperEagle midfielder, Michael Babatunde has undergone a successful surgery on his fractured wrist.

A statement by the team's Media Officer Ben Alaya on Thursday said Babatunde has since returned to the team's camp in Campinas.

Babatunde was welcomed back to the camp by team mates including Ogenyi Onazi, whose shot damaged the wrist.
The statement said Onazi had jokingly said that Babatunde stopped his goal bound shot.

"I swear that was a sure goal if not for Tunde's hand, I wish him quick recovery," he was quoted as saying.

Team Head Coach, Stephen Keshi, regretted that the player has been ruled out of the World Cup.
"Unfortunately, he is ruled out of the tournament because it will take at least three weeks for that surgery to heal," Keshi said in the statement.

It added that Keshi assured Nigerians of capable replacement for Babatunde in the team.

"It's not looking good that he will feature again in the tournament, we are sad about that but we have people who can fill in for him very well and I think we have to go win for him now", Keshi was quoted as saying.
Keshi also in the statement dispelled insinuations that he had any personal issues with Victor Moses.

"It's purely medical; my last child is older than Moses, so why will I quarrel with my son?
"People must find out facts and not speculate especially when we have a capable media person in our midst,'' the statement said.
The coach added that Moses has a muscle strain that was discovered by the team's medics after the first game against Iran.
He said that he was advised to rest it so that he can come out better in subsequent games.
"We can understand that all players want to play at the big stage but it's up to us and the medical team to manage their career and balance it with due diligence regarding their health.
"That is why we have not played him, we hope he should be back in training later on Thursday," Keshi said in the statement.
Moses it would be recalled watched the last group match from the stands. (NAN)

FIFA bans Luis Suarez for four months

Uruguay forward, Luis Suarez, has been banned for nine international matches with immediate alacrity, and from all football activity for four months, after being found guilty of biting Italy's Giorgio Chiellini.

Suarez, 27, bit the defender during the latter stages of the 1-0 victory that secured their place in the knockout stages of the ongoing Brazil 2014.

FIFA launched an immediate investigation and an independent disciplinary panel confirmed the punishment on Thursday.
The punishment takes immediate effect.
It means that, in addition to his World Cup immediately being over, Suarez will miss nine club matches including the Premier League, Champions League, and Capital One Cup matches.

A FIFA statement said: "The player Luis Suarez is to be suspended for nine official matches. The first match of this suspension is to be served in the upcoming [round of 16] FIFA World Cup fixture between Colombia and Uruguay.

"The remaining match suspensions shall be served in Uruguay's next FIFA World Cup matches, as long as the team qualifies, and/or in the representative team's subsequent official matches.

"The player is banned from taking part in any kind of football-related activity — administrative, sports or any other — for a period of four months. A stadium ban is pronounced against Luis Suarez, who is prohibited from entering the confines of any stadium during the period of the ban."
Suarez was also ordered to pay a fine of 100,000 Swiss francs.

Claudio Sulser, the chairman of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, said: "Such behaviour cannot be tolerated on any football pitch and in particular not at a FIFA World Cup, when the eyes of millions of people are on the stars on the field.

"The Disciplinary Committee took into account all the factors of the case and the degree of Mr Suarez's guilt. The decision comes into force as soon it is communicated."

Force Public Relations officer, Ngozi Braide explains
"There is nothing whatsoever suggesting that it was a bomb explosion. It was a tanker loaded with fuel that burst into flames. Policemen are on ground there now and we cannot yet ascertain the casualty figures. But everything is under control," she said. In a contradictory statement, Ibrahim Farinloye, the Spokesperson for the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA South-West said the cause of the fire was as a result of a gas cylinder explosion.
"People were reported to be filling gas into the cylinder before it exploded. The incident happened within Folawiyo Energy Premises but they did not allow fire men into their premises at all" Mr. Farinloye said in a text message to Premium times.

INCREDIBLE: Woman gives birth after 14 years pregnancy.

The woman in the picture above named "Mercy" miraculously gave birth to a baby girl after 14 years of being pregnant.
The baby was promptly and aptly christined Miracle. And why not? If the mother had delivered at the expected time the child would have been a teenager by now and possibly in secondary school at the JSS 3 level.
Mercy, a single parent, said of her ordeal during the 14 years she was pregnant but could not give birth: “When I first took in, I knew that I was pregnant with signs and test that confirmed that I was. Four months later, I went to hospital for another test, the result showed that I wasn’t pregnant, but had fibroid.
Subsequently, I began to experience bleeding, at least once a day. Sometimes, my tummy would protrude in the semblance of pregnancy. I went to different hospitals, and I kept on receiving the same result that nothing was wrong with me. But deep down inside , I knew that all was not well with me.
Churches and native doctors
So I was taken aback when a midwife told me I was pregnant. But considering the test which showed I had fibroid, I was angry with the midwife for giving me what I felt was a false prophecy of hope. Thereafter, I started going from one church to another and from one native doctor to the other. The results that I got from them all remained the same. I became more feeble and confused that I prayed for death to come.
I went again to the midwife two years after and complained to her about the pains that I was going through, she told me again that it was not fibroid but pregnancy; she advised me to be more prayerful so that God will deliver me from the hands of the devil. I kept on praying and at the same time asking myself that if truly I’m pregnant, why is it that the baby was not kicking?
I bought many concoctions that they said could cure fibroid and drank them. I even drank 12 bottles of a local cleanser but to no avail. This went on for years. Then God took pity on me and decided to wipe my tears.
On the day I gave birth to my baby girl, I initially thought that worms were trying to come out of my body not knowing that it was a baby. This was what I told the midwife when we came to her. But after examining me she told me to push.
I ignored her. I became unconscious for about 15 minutes and when I regained consciousness, I heard the cry of a baby. I was surprised and confused seeing my baby. I couldn’t believe my eyes. Hmm,I thank God for my life and that of my baby Miracle. I named her Miracle because she is truly a miraculous child”.
Miraculous child
The midwife at the Celestial Church of Christ, Kadoso Parish, Ajegunle where Mercy gave birth confirmed the development, especially the role she played.
The woman who simply gave her name as Mrs Ajetima informed thus: “She was pregnant for 14 years and was unable to give birth during this period. Then on Saturday around 6:30am I saw two persons carrying her to this place. When she came inside, I laid her down and asked one of my daughters to examine her, after the examination, I found out that it was a baby that was about coming out and not worms. I asked her to push and she refused. My daughter gave her a hard slap on her laps since she refused to push.
Behold a baby with placenta came out! I started shouting, calling on people to come and see for themselves that Mercy was truly pregnant, because if not, people will start to say that that Celestial woman has given Mercy a baby. Within a twinkle of an eye, the whole place was filled with people. God is wonderful”.
Also affirming the happy development, Mercy’s closest friend, Odunayo Odeyemi had this to say: “I have known mercy for over nine years now. I met her with the pregnancy . In fact, she did not know that she was pregnant. I followed her to many places but her problems kept on increasing. Merely looking at Mercy then before she gave birth, you will notice that she wasn’t okay. I kept advising her to have faith in God because I had experienced the same thing. I was pregnant for three years and three months and God delivered me.
Mercy came to me on that fateful day around 4am begging me to give her a pain reliever, that she was having pains all over her body. I dressed up and took her to a man that sells drugs. After taking the drug, on our way home, she started having serious pains. I called her brother and we both took her to the midwife. Hours later, she gave birth to a bouncing baby girl. We all were surprised because we never expected such a miracle to happen. She had a complete baby.”
Robert Davidson, one of Mercy’s friends, said that he concluded after seeing Mercy with a protruded tummy for three years that she had fibroid. So, “it came to me as a shock to learn that she delivered a bouncing baby girl.”
For Chidimma Ibe, a neighbour: “She always complained to me that she had stomach pains all these period. She told me that she had fibroid and sometime, she will complain of different things. She was totally confused as to what her condition was. I’m very much surprised and happy she gave birth to a complete baby girl. It was truly a miracle. God was on her side. God is wonderful because all the concoctions she took were enough to kill the baby.”
On the father of Baby Miracle, Mercy informed that they got separated on account of the ordeal that attended her pregnancy. “Friday is the name of my baby’s father. Actually, we are not married. He just proposed to me and I became pregnant for him. He knew about the pregnancy. He always gave me money for tests and scans but he got tired and left me after waiting for me for over a year without seeing any sign of a baby. I have no option than to go my own way,” she informed.
